Refining refers to upgrading weapons and armor upon visiting refining NPCs in upgrade/refine shops. The most popular refining spot is in Prontera, where Hollgrehenn resides. Upgrades improves the defense of armors and the damage of weapons, according to how high they are upgraded to.

To upgrade armor, you must be wearing the armor and have the required amount of zenny and Elunium. Any armor upgraded past 4 (which is the safe limit for all armors) has the possibility of breaking and being lost forever.

To upgrade weapons, you must have them equipped and have the required amount of zeny as well as the required metal (according to the level of the weapon). Level 1 weapons require Phracon and can be upgraded to 7 without having the risk of breaking. Level 2 weapons require Emveretarcon and can be upgraded to 6 without having the risk of breaking. Level 3 and 4 weapons require Oridecon and can be upgraded to 4 without having the risk of breaking.

The following table shows the success rates for refining weapons and armors up to their safe limit and up to the 10th (final) upgrade. It also includes the additional stats granted to the equipment after each successful upgrade.

Refining can also be done the Whitesmith class. With the skill weapon refine, Whitesmiths within the Pie sever have a 10% better chance to refine weapons only if said Whitesmith has 70 Job levels (Max Job level). In Force, 100 job levels will grant a 40% better better chance of refining weapons.

Note: Unlike Hollgrehenn, if you self refine a level 4 weapon, it can break at any point of the refining process because there is no true safety level for level 4 weapons.
